WISDOM
Proverbs- Profound Truth in Simple Terms
#14. A Word or Two About Pride…
Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.
Proverbs 16:18
We live in the Me generation. “Reality” TV dominates the airwaves. Degenerate and destructive behaviors are not just tolerated, but celebrated. When was the last time you went to a movie that wasn’t interrupted by a cell phone ringing (and being answered!)? The greatest sin in our society is to damage someone’s self-esteem. What went wrong? How do we get back to some sanity when it comes to a healthy sense of self?
-
Pride is not the same as…
- _CONFIDENCE/COMPETENCE_ .
Do you see a man skilled in his work?
He will serve before kings; he will not serve before obscure men.
Proverbs 22:29
Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.
Proverbs 16:3
-
Pride is…
- an exaggerated estimation of _SELF_.
Do you see a man wise in his own eyes?
There is more hope for a fool than for him.
Proverbs 26:12
- an unwarranted sense of _ENTITLEMENT_ or _ACCOMPLISHMENT_.
...give me neither poverty nor riches, but give only my daily bread.
Otherwise, I may have too much and disown You
and say, “Who is the Lord?”…
Proverbs 30:8, 9
- an _ARROGANCE_ toward and _DISRESPECT_ for others.
The proud and arrogant man- “Mocker” is his name;
he behaves with overweening pride.
Proverbs 21:24
-
Pride gets the best of me when I…
- reject _RESPONSIBILITY_ for my choices and/or actions.
A man’s own folly ruins his life, yet his heart rages against the Lord.
Proverbs 19:3
- Do I resist being held accountable?
- _RIDICULE_ or disparage others and/or their accomplishments.
There are… those whose eyes are ever so haughty,
whose glances are so disdainful.
Proverbs 30:13
- Do my reactions and comments come off as condescending?
- feel the need to always be _RIGHT_, or have my opinions/ideas accepted.
A fool finds no pleasure in understanding
but delights in airing his own opinions..
Proverbs 18:2
- Do I always have to have the last word?
- measure every person, event and issue with _ME_ as the standard for comparison.
“Who has gone up to Heaven and come down?
Who has gathered up the wind in the hollow of his hands?
Who has wrapped up the waters in his cloak?
Who has established all the ends of the earth?”
Proverbs 30:4
- Does it always have to be about me?
-
The antidotes for pride are…
- Learning to love and trust _GOD_ first (and most).
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.
Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.
This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.
Proverbs 3:5-8
The fear of the Lord teaches a man wisdom,
and humility comes before honor.
Proverbs 15:33
- Learning to love and serve _OTHERS_.
He who mocks the poor shows contempt for their maker;
whoever gloats over disaster will not go unpunished.
Proverbs 17:5
A generous man will prosper;
he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.
Proverbs 11:25
- Learning to see myself the way _GOD_ sees me.
Who can say, “I have kept my heart pure; I am clean and without sin”?
Proverbs 20:9
He who conceals his sins does not prosper,
but he who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.
Proverbs 28:13
