PROPOSITION 8

Jesus called His followers to be “salt and light.” In our political system, we have the opportunity as citizens to elect our government officials, and have a say in public policy. The alleged “wall of separation” between Church and State does not disqualify Christians from participating in the political arena. Jesus expects us to be positively influencing our culture and country. This is only possible when all of us who are eligible are registered to vote, and then vote our Christian values.

There is a movie in the local Cineplex called Swing Vote. In it, a fictional Presidential election comes down to one single voter. Surveys reveal that of the 60 million eligible Evangelical voters in the U.S., only 60% are registered! That means that more than 20 million followers of Jesus cannot participate in the national dialogue and exercise their right and duty to vote. More than 20 million godly voices went unheard on local and national issues!

This November, 3 states (California, Arizona, and Florida) will vote on measures to amend their State Constitutions to include language stating that only marriages between one man and one woman will be recognized in those states. In California, the measure is on the ballot as Proposition 8. Our Constitution says that an amendment will pass with a simple majority (50% plus 1). Current opinion polls show that the measure would lose in California if the election was held today. Are you that unregistered “swing vote”?

When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan.

 (Proverbs 29:2)

WHAT’S YOUR GIFT?

Have you turned in your Spiritual Gift survey yet? There’s one included in today’s bulletin so please prayerfully consider what your spiritual gift(s) might be and put the survey in the offering bag. God has given each believer at least one spiritual gift and we need to bless others by using it. Don’t leave your gift unopened or unused!

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN DODAMA?

If you haven’t been able to check out the blog that the mission team (from a local church) to Tanzania has written (www.cbctanzania2008.blogspot.com) , their VBS team visited Changombe Village where the orphanage of the children we sponsor is located. They cataloged the names and biographies of all the children and took their pictures. They even estimated their weight and height. Four children have AIDS, one may have cancer in her left leg and a few were coughing up blood which is a symptom of TB. After the evaluations, they held VBS and sang songs, read a Bible story, and handed out coloring pages, crayons and snacks. Lastly, they gave each one a shoebox gift provided by Samaritan’s Purse.

After the team returns from Africa, we plan to have a meeting here so we can all learn more about the trip and the children we sponsor. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress... (James 1:27)

JOIN US!

The Prayer Team invites all those involved in the Prayer Ministry for a continental breakfast on Sunday, September 7th at 9:15 am in the Fireside Room. This is an opportunity to see how everyone is doing and learn about the Prayer Conference on September 20th. Questions? See Gilbert Cruz, Camie Nicholson or Loy Tingley.

OVERHEARD…

If you want to make peace, you don’t talk to your friends. You talk to your enemies.                         ~Moshe Dayan
