Proposition 8

Jesus called His followers to be “salt and light.” In our political system, we have the opportunity as citizens to elect our government officials, and have a say in public policy. The alleged “wall of separation” between Church and State does not disqualify Christians from participating in the political arena. Jesus expects us to be positively influencing our culture and country. This is only possible when all of us who are eligible are registered to vote, and then vote our Christian values.

There is a movie in the local Cineplex called Swing Vote. In it, a fictional Presidential election comes down to one single voter. Surveys reveal that of the 60 million eligible Evangelical voters in the U.S., only 60% are registered! That means that more than 20 million followers of Jesus cannot participate in the national dialogue and exercise their right and duty to vote. More than 20 million godly voices went unheard on local and national issues!

This November, 3 states (California, Arizona, and Florida) will vote on measures to amend their State Constitutions to include language stating that only marriages between one man and one woman will be recognized in those states. In California, the measure is on the ballot as Proposition 8. Our Constitution says that an amendment will pass with a simple majority (50% plus 1). Current opinion polls show that the measure would lose in California if the election was held today. Are you that unregistered “swing vote”?

“Haven’t you read,” He replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’?... Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

(Matthew 19:4-6)

TAKE TIME FOR PRAYER

Join GVCC’s Prayer Ministry Team for thirty minutes of prayer after Worship today in the Pastor Scott’s office. You’ll already be here and it won’t take much time from your day. Then see for yourself how God answers.

THE SEVEN STANDARDS OF DISCIPLESHIP

A disciple of Christ is a baptized believer whose devotion to God is demonstrated in the following ways:

1. Consistent daily prayer, Bible reading, repentance and personal renewal.

2. Regular financial contribution to the work of the Lord being carried out by the congregation.

3. An understanding of spiritual authority, demonstrating a willing submission to the guidance and counsel of the church leadership.

4. Commitment to personal accountability through involvement in a small group and/or one-on-one discipling relationship.

5. Dependable participation in the scheduled activities of the congregation.

6. Reliable service in a designated area of ministry within the congregation; under the supervision of its leadership.

7. Active compassion for those in need and a heart for the lost.

OVERHEARD…

Government is not reason, it is not eloquence, it is force; like fire a troublesome servant and a fearful master. Never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible action.                                           ~George Washington
