EVERY THOUGHT CAPTIVE!

The Culture Wars are front and center in this year’s election! The definition of marriage, the role of government, the debate over when life begins (and should end), the reliability of the media; and other issues are unavoidable. Where should a believer stand on these issues? For the next 8 weeks, we will address these concerns from the pulpit. It is not the role of the Church to tell you how to vote, but we can help you clarify your thinking and develop a Biblically informed worldview. Don’t miss this challenging series.

DODOMA SPONSORS

Plan to stay after church one Sunday in early October for a short information meeting. We will get a report on our children, including a video from this summer’s VBS/medical trip, recent pictures and updated biographies. Our 2 year commitment ends in December, and if you are thinking about continuing your support, this meeting is a must! Togo’s sandwiches will be provided, so don’t worry about missing lunch.

WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON STUDY HALL

There are 4 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and 1 high school within walking distance of our church building. We have an opportunity to help some of these students with their studies. We also have several students here in our church family we can provide extra help and encouragement. If you are interested in being a “tutor”, a chef, or can spare some time to help set up tables and chairs, fill out the tab on this bulletin by writing your name, phone number, and “Study Hall” and put it in the offering bag or give it to one of the Elders. We will have a planning and “brainstorming” meeting soon, and are asking for ideas, input, and commitments so we can start this “experiment” in November.

THE SEVEN STANDARDS OF DISCIPLESHIP

A disciple of Christ is a baptized believer whose devotion to God is demonstrated in the following ways:

1. Consistent daily prayer, Bible reading, repentance and personal renewal.

2. Regular financial contribution to the work of the Lord being carried out by the congregation.

3. An understanding of spiritual authority, demonstrating a willing submission to the guidance and counsel of the church leadership.

4. Commitment to personal accountability through involvement in a small group and/or one-on-one discipling relationship.

5. Dependable participation in the scheduled activities of the congregation.

6. Reliable service in a designated area of ministry within the congregation; under the supervision of its leadership.

7. Active compassion for those in need and a heart for the lost.

SHOEBOXES!

November is just a couple months away when it will be time to start packing shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. It’s a good time to start thinking about what you’d like to send to children overseas. Start collecting pencils, crayons, paper goods, toys, hygiene supplies, etc. GVCC will be supplying 100 plastic shoe boxes that will be decorated at an October Craft Night.

YOUTH EVENT

Wednesday, September 24th, youth will be gathering at their school flag poles to pray. Later that day GVCC’s youth will be attending the Gathering of the Unashamed at San Jose City Hall. This free event will include worship, prayer, unity, powerful student testimonies and the worship band, Outcry. The group will leave GVCC at 6:00 pm and return at 8:30.

OVERHEARD

Govern a great nation as you would cook a small fish. Do not overdo it.                                           ~ Lao Tzu
